Welcome to our continued series: “Unburied” ! Each week, we’re going to select one forgotten oddball horror movie trailer from way back and dig it up so you can play with the bones. And just look what crawled out of the crypt this week!

Blood Diner came along at a time when cinema still wasn’t quite sure what to make of the true horror-comedy hybrid. These days the genre is shamefully limited to the straight-to-DVD or direct-stream market, barring the odd film festival breakout. Blood Diner was intended to be a spiritual sequel to Herschell Gordon LewisBlood Feast, of all movies, but ended up being more of a tribute to the style. It’s made by producer/ director/ writer Jackie Kong, whose mini-career has produced nothing but outlying oddities so far: female exploitation, sex comedies, horror, and intentionally lame spoofs. She was destined to make Blood Diner.

With that said, this trailer does the movie its just desserts (yes, pun very very intended!). It perfectly captures the tone of the film: throw away your brain and enjoy some tasteless low-brow laughs, along with gloriously depraved splatter-punk violence. Our trailer host, “Phil A. Mignon,” gently introduces us to the movie without spoiling it. Seriously, you’re not seeing one-tenth of the machine-gun staccato tempo this bonkers rave uses to dish out its onslaught of crazy. And on top of the intentionally lame gags and hedonistic gore, there’s one of those disembodied talking brains in a jar with a master plan milling about. In fact, there’s about ten other movies that seem to have blundered into the middle of this one by mistake. There’s no way to describe the plot except “one damn thing after another happens.” It is a far, FAAAAR cry from enriching quality cinema. That’s the point.
