As if getting pregnant weren't complicated enough, Lucy sets out to uncover the unsettling truth about her fertility doctor.
In the 2021 pregancy-horror thriller False Positive, Lucy and Adrian are a couple who want to have a baby but are having trouble conceiving. So they see Dr. John Hindle, a fertility specialist, and Adrian's mentor, for help. As a result, Lucy becomes pregnant using a unique technique. This event is both exciting and stressful for her, as she must now balance her pregnancy with her career.
Dr. Hindle confirms Lucy's pregnancy and requests Adrian present him with an award he's won in a ceremony. Lucy assists her husband in writing the speech for the event. She has a poor opinion of Dr. H but tries to be pleased on Adrian's behalf.
Dr. Hindle discovers three babies during an ultrasound: one girl on one placenta and twin boys sharing another. Dr. H. advises Lucy to selectively reduce the number of fetuses to improve the odds of a healthy birth. He suggests aborting the female fetus, but Lucy wants to remove the two male fetuses to have a girl. However, during the procedure, Lucy overhears Adrian and Dr. H. talking/plotting something.
As her suspicions about Dr. H. intensify, Lucy becomes increasingly interested in a midwife named Grace Singleton. She daydreams about conversations with her and steals a magazine from Dr. H's office that features an article about her, the same magazine his unnerving nurse later comes to Lucy & Adrian's apartment to collect. She tells a confidant from her mother-to-be group that she believes Dr. H. did something illicit and that Adrian is in on it. Lucy has a bizarre dream that Dr. H. & Adrian are having an affair and finds a file about herself in Adrian's lockbox upon waking up. She confides in a close friend whose husband is a lawyer and is comforted by the reassurance that everything will be alright.
Things turn for the worse at work, and Lucy becomes increasingly scared of Dr. H. She tells Adrian that she wants to switch to Grace. At her baby shower, she also discovers that her mommy-group friend is also a patient of Dr. H. and has made no effort to look into what she found (she found prescribed medicine by Dr. H. in the friend's bathroom). Adrian also decides to join Dr. H's office so that they would have a shared practice which doesn't sit well with Lucy.
Lucy's suspicions are confirmed when she goes into labor, and Dr. H. is there to help with the birth - the twin boys were born from the terminated female fetus. She has a baby boy, and Grace suggests they go to the hospital because Lucy is bleeding. Instead, Adrian takes her to Dr. H., who delivers the second baby and the terminated fetus with its placenta.
In talking to Grace after the ordeal, Lucy realizes that she had imagined Grace as different than she was. Lucy had been seeing her in African dress, quoting wisdom, but in reality, she's just a midwife wearing plain clothing. She has issues connecting with the twin boys and goes to talk to Dr. H. He tells her that he used his sperm to impregnate her, and they get into a physical altercation. His nurse comes in to vouch for him, but Lucy can drug the nurse (Dr. H. was going to drug Lucy) and beat Hindle badly. She gets the fetus that Dr. H. had kept and returned home.
She hallucinates picking up the twins and throwing them out the window, but in the vision, they floated away into the sky. Adrian comes home, and they have a heated argument. Lucy is confident he knew all along, which he denies. She gives him the two babies and demands that he leave. Lucy removed Wendy from the plastic bag and put her nipple against the baby's face. The baby then began to nurse, and the movie ended. It's unclear if this is another hallucination or reality, but it's most likely a hallucination.
