Alexandra reluctantly tags along for Slasher Sleepout, an extreme event that is part camping trip, part haunted house, and part escape room. But when the fun turns deadly, Alex has to play the game if she wants to make it out alive.

Ruin Me: Spoilers Below

Ruin Me (2017)

In the 2017 horror movie Ruin Me, Alex and her boyfriend Nathan go on a camping trip based around horror movies and meet another couple as well as two other guys. After their personal belongings are taken away and kidnapped, the participants are thrown into the forest. It is up to Alex to use her intelligence to navigate the puzzles, even though she is not interested in horror movies. She is the only one who figures out every riddle.

She has help that makes her focus more, probably in the form of pills she has to take every day. Nathan's got some secrets of his own. For starters, tickets to the game are pretty pricey, so Nathan's friend footed the bill. But Nathan told him not to come and instead took his girlfriend to test her. This is revealed in a clever little twist near the end.

Meanwhile, the other campers are "murdered" one by one. There is an "escaped psychiatric patient" in the woods as well. Yes, these are all in quotations because none of it is real. It is a spoiler, but it is evident from the movie's early stages. The true story isn't about determining if the event happened. The true story is about Alex, a person addicted to heroin who became sober. Or at least, that's what she tells everyone.

Alex had a boyfriend, Jared, who introduced her to drugs. Jared took her to the hospital when she overdosed, but Alex decided to get clean. She knows Nathan would benefit her, but she doesn't feel emotionally connected to him. Six weeks before they are scheduled to go on a camping trip, she sees Jared and relapses into drug addiction. She begins using drugs instead of her antidepressants.

Nathan devises a scheme to get his girlfriend to confess the truth to him, even going so far as to make her pick between him and Jared in a game that Alex believes is intended to terrify her. Despite Jared being her choice, Nathan remains silent and allows her to keep her secrets. Eventually, when Alex learns the truth about the game and that no one was actually in danger, she looks for Jared, hoping his unexplained absence was part of the game. On the drive home, she texts Jared but doesn't receive a response.

They pull over, and Alex uses the opportunity to call Jared. His phone rings, but the sound is coming from her trunk! She opens it to find Jared unconscious and gagged. Nathan is revealed to be the one who set up the puzzle and is disgusted that Alex still chose drugs and Jared over him. However, when Nathan asks her to stab Jared, she panics. Nathan murders Jared, and Alex stabs Nathan in the neck when he attempts to strangle her. Unusually, she pierces him in the neck with her sobriety necklace. Does it signify she won't be sober anymore?

Well, she is likely to be arrested and incarcerated when the authorities discover her fingerprints on the knife and drugs in her system.
