Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin Review

Margot wants to make a documentary about Margot's past, with the help of her cameraman friend Chris. She wonders why her mother, Sarah, abandoned her outside a hospital when she was just a baby. She uses a genetics website to meet one of her living blood relatives, the Amish Samuel, who is currently undergoing rumspringa. After the three flies to Pennsylvania, Dale, their documentary's soundman, joins them. Samuel leads them to Beiler Farm, his and Sarah's home.

Jacob, Sarah's father and the patriarch of the commune, welcomes Margot, Chris, Dale, and Samuel and gives them a room to stay in. Margot wakes up in the night and sees red lights moving in the distance; Samuel dismisses it as a hunting party. Next, Margot visits the barn and finds a little girl brushing her doll's hair. When the girl says her name is Sarah, Margot tells her that her mother shares her name. Then, cryptically, the girl says that Sarah is "still there." Later that night, Margot hears sounds from her mother's old room in the attic and sees a spirit.

Margot, Chris, and Dale interview Jacob on camera the following day. He tells them about Sarah, whose free-spirited nature led her to defy the commune tradition by sleeping with a boy from a neighboring village and getting pregnant. Their custom said that she must give up her child to an adoptive family, but she disobeyed and left Margot outside a hospital, and Sarah is assumed dead. Later, Margot's team looks through their drone footage and finds a church warning not to enter, and Jacob arrives to stop the team from trespassing. That night, Margot and the team discover the commune performing a strange ritual in the barn in which they sacrifice a newborn two-headed goat.

Margot is determined to uncover the secrets of the commune, so while Dale distracts Samuel, Chris and herself break into the church. They find murals of the demonic figure Asmodeus and a deep tunnel which Margot descends before retreating when she hears a strange noise. The next day Margot sneaks into Jacob's room, where she finds out that he and Samuel already knew she was Sarah's daughter and orchestrated her arrival. She becomes upset, and Chris suggests they leave, but a shadow-like ghoulish being assaults Margot that night. The next day, Chris and Dale find Margot, catatonic and covered in blood-soaked sheets; despite the local doctor's assurances that she's fine and doesn't need the help of a hospital, the two are suspicious.

Chris and Dale need a new car battery, so they hitch a ride into town with the mailman, who informs them that the people at Beiler Farm are not Amish. Instead, the two discover that Beiler Farm is a community of demon worshippers using the internet. The legends go that the Norwegian village of Beskytter suffered a massacre believed to be caused by Asmodeus. They trapped the demon inside a woman's body, and they continued the bloodline by passing the monster down from mother to daughter. Chris and Dale realize that Margot was brought to the settlement by Jacob and Samuel to continue this ancient tradition.

When Chris and Dale return from the store, Margot disappears. Chris searches the church for Margot while Dale installs the car battery. Chris encounters Jacob and kills him before finding Margot at the bottom of the pit and rescuing her. Unfortunately, a skeletal creature fleeing the church pursues them. The beast kills Dale and chases Margot and Chris in the barn, but Margot, realizing that the beast is Sarah possessed by Asmodeus, calls her by her name, causing the creature to relent. Margot then shoves Sarah in her weakened state, who falls and impales herself on a row of sharp farm tools before dying.

With its possession dead, Asmodeus is free to wreak havoc in Beiler Farm, causing the residents to kill the livestock and each other while setting fire to their homes. Chris and Margot recover the car keys from Dale's corpse and flee the farm. Later, police officers arrive on the scene and are attracted to a child's crying in the barn. Upon investigating, they realize the demonically-possessed Samuel causes the noises. Samuel forces the police officers to commit suicide using his demonic possession before driving away in a police cruiser.
