A fun filled flight to a remote atoll turns into a nightmare for five passengers when their seaplane is destroyed in a freak accident and they are trapped on a raft, 100 miles from shore with man-eating sharks lurking beneath the surface.
What is the outcome of Great White, and are any of the characters still alive by the end of the film? When director Steven Spielberg released Jaws in 1975, other filmmakers noticed that a man-eating shark could add a new level of fear to a horror movie. Since then, shark-based survival horror movies like The Reef and The Shallows have exploited viewers' fears of the deep ocean and the dangerous predators that live there.
Great White is the latest movie to enter the shark horror genre. The film was directed by Australian filmmaker Martin Wilson and released in 2021. It features the same production team that was behind 47 Meters Down, another shark attack movie thriller. The film is about Kaz and Charlie, a couple who own a seaplane business, who are hired by Joji and Michelle, a wealthy couple, to fly them to Hell's Reef to scatter Michelle's grandfather's ashes.
The quartet's travels with cook Benny turn dark when they find a man's corpse on the reef. They learn from his cell phone that he and his girlfriend are yachting and head off in the seaplane to save her. However, two great white sharks sink the seaplane, forcing the group to retreat to a life raft.
Charlie tries to navigate the current, using the compass and oars from the life raft. Michelle and Joji take turns rowing the raft, but Michelle falls asleep and loses one of the oars. Kaz jumps into the water and retrieves the oar, but Benny and Joji start fighting because the latter is jealous, and he pushes Benny into the water, who is devoured by the hungry shark. The shark rams the raft, flipping everyone into the water, and it kills Joji as he tries to swim back to safety, leaving Kaz, Charlie, and Michelle struggling to survive.
They have to row with their hands as they only have one oar, and Charlie has the horrifying realization that there is now more than one shark. The next day their raft is slowly losing air, and they're being picked off one by one by the sharks despite the land being in sight. Charlie and Kaz decide to try and distract the shares so that Michelle can make it to land. Unfortunately, it turns out that Kaz is pregnant with Charlie's child. With Kaz's help, Charlie manages to kill one of the sharks using a flare and a knife but is soon killed by the remaining great white after his flare shot misses one of them. Kaz and Michelle take refuge on a rusty, partially submerged shipwreck, but do they survive the film?
Kaz and Michelle survive their attack from the great white shark, despite the movie not featuring many survivors. Kaz hides in the underwater part of the ship but almost drowns trying to escape. Michelle appears and saves Kaz from certain death, giving her the strength to dislodge a large piece of ship debris that impales the last shark. The movie ends with the survivors safe onshore.
