It's about an investigation to figure out who Jigsaw was and how he's still managing to tangle victims into traps from beyond the grave.

Saw 4 was directed by Darren Lynn Bousman (who also directed Spiral and Death Of Me) and stars Tobin Bell (from Belzebuth and Jigsaw), Scott Patterson (from Saw V) and Costas Mandylor (from Daddy's Girl and Residue).

Saw IV Review

Saw 4 starts off with John Kramer, aka The Jigsaw Killer, laid out on a medical examiners slab. A very graphic autopsy ensues that leads to the discovery of a "I want to play a game" tape lodged in his intestines that talks of a new game targeting Lieutenant Hoffman, the last living detective from the original case.

Cut to a guy in a mausoleum chained to another guy. One guy has his eyelids sewn shut while the other has his lips sewn shut. The key to free the lips guy is wrapped around the eyes guy's neck. Of course he can't tell him this because of the lips thing and the eyes guy can't trust what he can't see. A clever Jigsaw trap from beyond the grave.

Saw 4 revolves around Hoffman and his team's investigation to figure out who is helping Jigsaw and/or Amanda, Jigsaw's original sidekick. As the investigation unspools we also learn more about Jigsaw's roots via an interrogation of his ex wife.

Here's the victim breakdown of Saw 4: There's a guy who gets his neck crushed, a girl who gets scalped, a guy who gets quartered, a guy who gets bled, a cop who gets skewered, a woman who gets shrapnelled, a guy who gets sliced up, 3 guys who get shot and a guy who gets his head obliterated.

This is the first movie in the Saw series so far that feels repetitive. It's just more of the same. Sure, there's a bit more background on what happened in Saw 3, but really it's just more traps. Not a bad thing, I mean if you're watching Saw 4 it's what you came to see, it just doesn't bring anything new to the table.

Worth Watching?

Saw 4 is the kind of movie you watch when you're just working through the franchise. It's not something you'd want to put on as a standalone. It relies almost entirely on the previous 3 movies. So if you liked the other 3 you'll probably like this one.
