It’s about a group of friends who get stranded in a seemingly abandoned town, which just so happens to be crawling with a gang of colorful psychotic clowns.
ClownTown was directed by (and stars) Tom Nagel, Brian Nagel, Andrew Staton and Katie Keene .
ClownTown is exactly what I thought it would be. An odd little B-horror that promised 90 mins of entertainment, as long as I didn't take it too seriously. Movies like this (low budget, familiar plot, cliche antagonists) are usually a blast IF they're intentionally campy or if they're ultra hardcore.
The problem with ClownTown is they went right down the middle and actually attempted to make a "scary" movie. And when it comes to horror movies about clowns, unless you're backed by the mind of Stephen King ( It 2017) or working from an entirely unique angle ( Clown 2014), your odds of winning an audience are pretty damn low.
Watching this movie is like watching a hundred others like it (just with clowns chasing our mindless sheep around instead of killer rednecks, zombies, slashers or members of the Firefly family). One particular movie that comes to mind is House of Wax, the 2005 reboot. It's basically the same movie, complete with the seemingly abandoned town being run by psycho killers (spoiler alert). The big difference is House of Wax worked from a unique angle which made it an awesome movie, despite its use of tired tropes.
I don't regret watching ClownTown, there were a few cool parts and one very cool clown, I just wouldn't watch it again and couldn't in good conscience recommend it to anyone else.
