It's about a group of people who get trapped in a mall overnight and become the targets of rogue killer robots.
Chopping Mall was directed by Jim Wynorski (who also directed CobraGator, Piranhaconda, and Komodo Vs. Cobra) and stars Kelli Maroney (from Gila!, Night of the Comet), Barbara Crampton (from Reborn, Dead Night, Death House) and Karrie Emerson (from Evils of the Night).
So, this mall decides for some reason to become the world's most secure mall. They do this by contracting the help of some seriously sci-fi, and unrealistically expensive, security robots. These robots come equipped with everything from artificial intelligence, lazers and a wide variety of weapons that no security bot would ever need.
But hey, it was the 80's and people apparently wanted to see a Robocop slasher.
And speaking of the 80's, Chopping Mall is one of the most 80's movies you'll ever see. It was actually a blast to watch for this aspect alone. Everything was so over the top and drenched in cheese. And like many 80's horrors, the movie poster is very misleading. The movie is about killer robots, AKA "Killbots", not about severed floating arms or heads in shopping bags.
I loved every minute of this movie, from the cheesy characters to the cheesy one-liners the Killbots kept dropping. Chopping Mall is one for the DVD shelf.
