Annabelle 3 Review

Annabelle 3, Annabelle Comes Home, movie #7 in the Conjuring Universe. The Conjuring 3 will make #8.

I liked Annabelle 1 (even though many didn't), I really liked Annabelle 2 and I really did not like Annabelle 3. Annabelle Comes Home reminded me a lot of The Curse of La Llorona in that it's a generic horror movie. It's generic, empty and feels lazy. It feels like a movie made up of the trimmings of other horror movies. It's literally a scared babysitter movie. Ed and Lorraine Warren are barely in it. It's 3 teens and a 12 year old running around a house screaming.

Annabelle 3 is a haunted house movie, a slow, long haunted house movie. Not a lot happens for most of the run time. There's a lot of creaky floors, squeaky doors, slow nervous walks down dark hallways and flashlights with flickering bulbs.

And jump scares. Lots and lots of jump scares.

Anyone who knows All Horror knows I'm actually cool with jump scares. They're used to make casual horror fans jump and laugh with their friends. I get it, they can be fun and there's definitely a place for them in horror.

But, jump scares can be lazy. And you know you're watching lazy jump scares when you're in a jam-packed theater on opening night and the laughing with friends thing ends after the 3rd or 4th jump. Halfway through the movie the entire theater had become used to the jumps and just sat quietly through them.

Annabelle 3 is generic horror and has weak jump scares. It also gets really boring halfway through. Nothing really happens for a really long time in this movie. There's endless suspense, but nothing ever really happens. A good half hour could have easily been cut from this.

All that being said, the parts about it being generic, overly reliant on jump scares and pretty boring overall, it also is rated R? No blood, no kills, no violence, no swearing, but still rated R.

One thing Annabelle Comes Home did have going for it was atmosphere. All the Conjuring Universe movies nail the atmosphere. The movie drips style which is really cool. But, sadly, atmosphere isn't memorable and Annabelle 3 gives you nothing else to hold onto. It's unfortunately forgettable.

Worth Watching?

Nope. Annabelle Creation was great. Annabelle was good. Annabelle Comes Home brings nothing new to the table.
