It’s about the Abbott family’s continued struggle to survive amidst a post-apocalyptic world overrun by monsters with incredible hearing. It’s a sequel to ‘A Quiet Place’.

Directed by John Krasinski and featuring the same cast as the first film (with the added inclusion of Cillian Murphy) at first, ‘A Quiet Place Part II’ was looking like it wasn’t going to offer much more than the first film. Horror sequels are notorious for often being subpar to their predecessor. More often than not they prove to be disappointing and mediocre imitations of what came before. So when one comes along that not only meets the highs of the original, but surpasses them, it’s not something you want to miss. ‘A Quiet Place Part II’ is one of those films. Staring Emily BluntMillicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe among others.

Silence is Not Enough

A Quiet Place Part 2 Review

John Krasinski capitalises on the action neatly strung throughout ‘A Quiet Place’ but never abandons the horror elements that made his first film so popular. The tone established remains sinister and filled with dread but the world the characters we’ve grown to care for is allowed to expand. Although the monsters lose a good portion of their fear factor with every frame they’re in, the breakneck pace of this film makes up for it.

We’re shown day one of the monster outbreak and it's simply tremendous. From the brilliant acting and CGI to Krasinski’s outstanding directing, this film starts off with a bang and the rest of the film never fails to reach the opening's high points. The cleverness of our main characters is on full display (making us like them even more) and the inescapable horror of the monsters is at its finest during the opening.

A Quiet Place Part II’ then continues on from the end of the first film. The Abbott family are in an even more hopeless situation than before, leaving their safe haven in the search of other human life. They find it too, in the form of Emmett, an old family friend. His bitterness and refusal to help them is more understandable than the film seems to want you to believe but he inevitably agrees to help the Abotts.

Cillian Murphy’s performance is as usual brilliant and he settles in well alongside the rest of the tremendous cast. His character is the most intriguing part about this film and he adds a tinge of realism missing from the rest of the small cast. Not quite replacing John Krasinski, he does fill out a film that could have otherwise felt exceedingly empty.

Many might miss the slow-burning anxiety of ‘A Quiet Place’ but I think if this film followed a similar path, many would feel it was a carbon copy. Krasinski was faced with an almost impossible task of creating a sequel, doomed to feel unnecessary, well... good. And he did it with flair, ambition and style. This film is equally as entertaining and consistent as the first and that's incredible in its own right.

Worth Watching?

Absolutely. Never failing to reach the heights of its predecessor, this is a brilliant horror film with great acting, directing and plot. You don’t want to miss it.
