If you made it to San Diego Comic Con this year, you may already have gotten a little taste of the upcoming James Wan production, The Curse of La Llorona. If not, you’ll be as thrilled as we were to hear that the first official trailer has just dropped. It’s also positively terrifying, but what else would you expect from the same team that brought you the Conjuring franchise?
If you’re familiar with Mexican folklore, you may also be familiar with the legend of La Llorona, “the weeping woman”. She is said to be the apparition of a woman who drowned her own children in a river out of jealousy, shortly before committing suicide by jumping in after them once she realized what she’d done. Now she’s damned, stuck between heaven and hell. She also continues to cry for her dead children, as well as stalk the children of others in hopes of replacing her own.
The Curse of La Llorona brings the mystery and terror of this disturbing story to life on the big screen. Not only is it produced by James Wan of the legendary Conjuring universe, but it’s directed by Michael Chaves who was also recently hired to direct upcoming production, The Conjuring 3. Linda Cardellini (Hunter Killer, The Lazarus Project), Raymond Cruz, and Marisol Ramirez star.
The film’s storyline is set in 1970’s Los Angeles and features Cardellini as Anna Garcia, a social worker who just so happens to also be a single mom. When one of her cases ends in possible foul play, she beings to investigate. In the process, she discovers La Llorona not only isn’t just a folk tale but is determined to gain possession of Anna’s children. Look for The Curse of La Llorona in a theater near you starting April 19, 2019. In the meantime, enjoy the trailer!
