Yeon Sang-Ho’s runaway zombie hit, Train to Busan made history when it became the first Korean film of 2016 to exceed 10 million theatergoers. It’s also received widespread critical acclaim, as well as gained a loyal following of fans that love it for its unique approach to the classic idea of a zombie apocalypse. Naturally, it was no surprise to horror fans when news began to circulate about an English-language remake in the works.

In fact, five major studios were originally in the running to acquire this hot new project – Universal, Paramount, Lionsgate, Screen Gems, and New Line. Since the news first broke, Universal has officially bowed out. Rumor also has it that New Line is now in the lead. The rights package for this red hot remake is expected to sell for a whopping seven figures sometime this week, so Train to Busan fans should definitely stay tuned.

So far, we also know that the next incarnation of Train to Busan will be written by Gary Dauberman who also penned New Line’s hits The Nun and Annabelle, as well as Andy Muschetti’s It and its upcoming sequel. James Wan (The Conjuring, Insidious) will be producing the film alongside French studio, Gaumont, the original rightsholder to the English-language remake of Busan. Considering both Wan’s and Dauberman’s connections to New Line Cinema, it makes sense that that particular studio would be interested in releasing this film as well. Although nothing’s set in stone yet, it’s a possibility that Dauberman could also wind up in the director’s chair.

The original Train to Busan follows the story of a group of passengers aboard a commuter train traveling from Seoul to Busan. When South Korea falls victim to a mysterious zombie virus, everyone on board the train is left struggling to survive. We can’t wait to see where Wan and Dauberman take this beloved zombie favorite!
