Years after Don’t Look Now, Nicolas Roeg brought an intriguing and terrifying introduction to horror for many kids in the 90s with The Witches, based on the novel by Roald Dahl. (Who can forget Anjelica Huston’s tearing-off-the-face scene!?) Now, Robert Zemeckis hopes to scare a new generation of future horror connoisseurs as the director of his own screenplay adapted from Dahl’s novel. MovieWeb states that filming begins in April in Georgia, Alabama, and The United Kingdom.

The film will follow the same general plot of a boy and his friends happening across a coven of witches who eat children. Anne Hathaway and Octavia Spencer have already been cast. Hathaway is set to star as the Grand High Witch, taking over the role that Huston portrayed in the original film. Huston is not expected to be part of the adaptation.

Zemeckis co-wrote the screenplay with Kenya Barris of black-ish fame. Of a number of producers, most notable is Guillermo del Toro, who will provide invaluable input as the only horror maven attached to the project.

The Witches is due out in theaters October 16th, 2020.
