The Conjuring 3 will feature a new man behind the camera. Newcomer Michael Chaves is set to direct the third film in the franchise, while James Wan, who directed The Conjuring and The Conjuring 2, will stay on to produce through his company Atomic Monster alongside Peter Safran’s Safran Company. Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson are set to return as Lorraine and Ed Warren.
Wan and Chaves previously worked together on New Line Cinema’s The Curse of La Llorona, based on a supernatural Latino folktale, out inApril 2019. New Line and Wan worked well with Chaves, and they agreed to hand the franchise’s reigns to him. “While working closely with Chaves on The Curse of La Llorona, I got to know him as a filmmaker,” Wan said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. “Chaves’s ability to bring emotion to a story, and his understanding of mood and scares, make him a perfect fit to direct the next Conjuring film.”
The story, which thus-far has been kept under wraps, will be penned by Conjuring 2 writer David Leslie Johnson.
The Conjuring franchise, with spin-offs such as Annabelle and The Nun, will resume its place as a horror juggernaut when it begins filming next year.
