The Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark film, based on the late Alvin Schwartz’s children’s book series, dropped four short trailers during the Superbowl....and true to the name, they’re scary as hell.
The notorious Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark book series was highly controversial (and even banned) for its sometimes fun, sometimes spine-tingling horror stories for children. The original book was published in 1981 but has been scaring young adolescents ever since. Horror lovers over the world have been anticipating writer and producer Guillermo del Toro’s take on the books - and he didn’t disappoint.
The SFX team took Stephen Gammell’s illustrations to a whole new level; they honored the drawings by getting their nightmarish figures looking creepily close to the original illustrations in the book, and the creatures they created are what childhood nightmares are made of. Director André Øvredal noted on his twitter account that the images are not CGI.
If you can’t get enough Scary Stories, Wild Eye Releasing acquired the rights to the Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark documentary, and that film should be receiving a limited theatrical release.
If the trailers are any indication, Scary Stories is set to satisfy the horror-loving child in all of us as we see our old nightmares come to life. It’ll be out in theaters on August 9.
