Documentarian Alexandre O. Philippe, known for his work taking a closer look at classic horror films in docs such as 78/52: Hitchcock’s Shower Scene, debuted a new film at Sundance last month. Memory: The Origins of Alien looks at the roots of Ridley Scott’sAlien, including its ties to mythology, underground comics, art, and even dark visions experienced by filmmaker Dan O’Bannon and artist H.R. Giger.
Philippe remarked that he is not interested in making “behind the scenes” documentaries, and he is more interested in dissecting the origins of scenes within films. He wanted to know why certain scenes stay with us throughout our lives, and how those scenes came to fruition through an amalgam of stories throughout history.
Interviews with Alien cast include Veronica Cartwright and Tom Skerritt. The film begins with a shot by shot look at the iconic “alien bursting from the chest” scene. (According to an interview with SlashFilm, the doc was originally titled Chestburster.)
Philipe’s next documentary venture explores The Exorcist in depth. Can’t wait.
