It’s been a great year for diversity in horror as previously underrepresented minorities are finally able to showcase their talents. One of those major talents is horror lover, actress and filmmaker Gigi Saul Guerrero, a 29 year old who is bound to leave her mark on the genre. She wrapped filming on the Hulu series Into the Dark last month.
Into the Dark, produced by Blumhouse, is a horror anthology series of films first released in 2018, with each episode focusing on a different holiday. Guerrero discussed her Mexican influence in her filmmaking in an interview with REMCZLA. “I like to look at it not as a disadvantage but as an advantage to stand out.” On her fourth pitch to Blumhouse, she told the powerhouse company, “If you guys hire me, I’m gonna make this so Mexican, so chingona! There will be sangre, I promise! Let me make this as Mexican as possible.”
Guerrero’s holiday theme is Independence Day, and the episode will delve into a horror story of Mexican immigrants in the United States. Richard Cabral will star. The project is fully bilingual.
Guerrero, who was born in Mexico City and currently resides in Canada, screened her film La Quinceañera at the Vancouver Women in Film Festival last week. She was recently named one of Variety’s 10 Latinxs to Watch.
