There have been rumblings about Eli Roth working with Miramax on an upcoming project, with some even speculating that a follow-up to Roth’s ‘Thanksgiving’ trailer was in the works. We can now confirm via Deadline that though the feature film version of the trailer isn’t happening (right now, at least), he’s instead serving up a survival thriller titled The River at Night.

Winifred is in crisis. Dealing with death, divorce, and a dead-end job, her vulnerability is at an all-time high, and she feels the need for a getaway. She travels to the Allagash Wilderness with three friends, but when a freak accident separates the women from their raft and belongings, that’s when the nightmare begins. When the women happen across a group of strangers, it becomes evident that they may not be the saviors the women are looking for. Wini will have to reach deep within her to do whatever she has to do for survival.

Roth is creating the project with Kevin Williams, based on the novel by Erica Ferencik. Roth will produce alongside Roger Birnbaum under their new company The Arts District, the first project for the label. Roth is anticipating directing the project, while Melanie Toast is being eyed to adapt the screenplay.

“Kevin and I had long been a mutual admiration society, and when he told me this was Girls Trip meets Deliverance, I said, I’m in,” Roth told Deadline. “I’ve always been drawn to these clash of culture movies like Cabin Fever and Hostel, where they go for an adventure and everything turns against them and we see what they’re made of. The book is fun and it’s a smart thriller.”

The River at Night begins shooting in Massachusetts this month.
