Miramax has given the green light for horror film Limbo, a supernatural thriller written by Matthew Jennison and Chris Peckover. Peckover is set to direct, making this his second horror film at the helm; Jennison and Peckover previously worked as producer and director, respectively, on the well-received Christmas horror invasion film Better Watch Out.

What Peckover said began as a “passion project”, Limbo follows a young mother who becomes possessed by a seemingly malevolent spirit, and the entity takes over body while her soul is trapped in her house - in limbo, if you will. Miramax’s Bill Block was excited about the story, telling Deadline, “We are witnessing a renaissance of quality horror films at the moment. It’s a genre that continues to captivate global audiences. Having a smart script with a big idea and some fierce partners in Tim Palen, Snoot Entertainment and a fresh voice in Chris Peckover – Limbo is something we’re really excited about.”

Undoubtedly, the excitement over the horror genre comes from Miramax’s deal with Jason Blum for his Halloween reboot last year; the film was a huge box office hit and has raked in over $255M worldwide.

Production is set to begin in January with Miramax executive Andrew Golov overseeing. Golov previously executive produced on the adaptation of Stephen King’s Thinner.
