From its opening title (which manages to satirize “Frankenstein” and “Citizen Kane” at the same time) to its closing, uh, refrain, “Young Frankenstein” is not only a Mel Brooks movie but also a loving commentary on our love-hate affairs with monsters.
Director Brooks executes several good jokes on horror movie style, but his film has no distinctive visual style of its own.
Frankenstein needs no apologies. Each indelible laugh follows in furious succession from the one before, and before you know it, Brooks has made you cross through the nonsense to discover empathy for his cartoony characters. It's a work of sublime pop art, a deathless comedy classic.
