What to Expect

My teenage son who read the book before seeing the movie complained that the only thing World War Z had in common with the book was the title. In the book, the zombies were conventionally slow and mindless, while in the movie they were fast and used their overwhelming numbers to their advantage. I'm a big fan of envelope pushing and like that these zombies were just a little bit harder to escape than they were in any previous zombie flick. In a typical zombie movie you'll see a guy running from a dozen zombies who steadily, and individually, either catch up to him or get blocked by a wall or helplessly watch the dude escape in a helicopter. In World War Z, the zombies are like a tidal wave of undead corpses crashing down everything in their path. There's no running from them. Hop on a helicopter to safety? Nope, these zombies will literally pile up on each other faster than the pilot can take off, creating a rope of corpses tethering the chopper to the doom that awaits below.
