Billed as a blend of Horror, Mystery, and Thriller, The Village in the Woods can also be described more succinctly as Folk Horror: a neo noir take on the genre that couples a slow-burn screenplay with haunting atmospherics.
Overall this is a horror that does rely on the atmosphere, which is almost a character by itself, and keeps us feeling uneasy for the most part, reflecting just how the village is making the new couple feel.
The Village in the Woods is not willing to easily give up its secrets. The film uses this to its advantage as that sense of weird mystery goes hand-in-hand with the rising apprehension of each creepy and claustrophobic scene.
