Critic Reviews:

Considering that religious fundamentalists continue to persecute gay people, it’s shortsighted to present a story like The Last Thing Mary Saw with such little concern for the current real-life ramifications of being queer . . . Unfortunately, The Last Thing Mary Saw ends up feeling like little more than mimicry, both of more impactful LGBTQ stories and of films like The Witch, which utilize their period settings for scare appeal and intriguing drama rather than just set dressing.

These two girls are supposed to be fired up on me-and-you-against-the-world teenage love, but the chemistry is a bit underwhelming. And I must say, my tolerance for seeing women and girls abused on screen is at an all-time low.

It’s not hard to see why The Last Thing Mary Saw is being compared to Robert Eggers’ The Witch. While director Edoardo Vitaletti doesn’t quite escape the shadow of that horror hit, he does create an atmospheric experience that showcases solid technique for infusing emotion through color and sound.
