Critic Reviews:

Son is a tense thrill ride that explodes with a mother’s love for her son. Whether what she sees is real or not, Laura will do whatever it takes to protect her child from any impending danger. There’s plenty of blood and special FX to gross out most horror fans, and the chemistry between Andi Matichak and Luke David Blumm is tangible.

The plot is a standard supernatural cult thriller with more than a few predictable twists and turns that you can see coming from a mile off. While it is all familiar and somewhat predictable, the script still throws in a few extra nuggets of mystery to keep you on your toes, such as the suggestion that (without spoiling too much) things might not be as supernatural as they appear.

I wouldn’t say that Son is entirely successful as a total package – Emile Hirsch is woefully underutilized, and something about the whole thing just feels a little bit lacking. That said, it is absolutely worth watching for Andi Matichak’s performance – and the amazing interaction between her and Luke Blumm’s David.
