Critic Reviews:

Shyam Singha Roy is emotional periodic drama with with terrific and riveting performances and impressive story line. It has all elements to engage the audience. A brilliant and Beautiful film has all ingredients to attain cult status in future.

There is the Shakespearean ambition behind SSR’s story and in fact, it would have worked better with character development. It just feels like we are promised a 56-course (chappan bhog) meal and given only a 3-course meal with drawings of 53 other tasty dishes hanging on the wall.

The film is handicapped by its aspiration to be like a coffee-table book. Characters look photogenic, but not rooted in their reality. Roy’s present-day self, Vasu, an aspiring filmmaker in a financial crisis, ironically, lives in a plush condo that has a breathtaking view of the Durgam Cheruvu bridge. The brothel where Maithrayee lives with her fellow Devadasi women is ethereally beautiful.
