Making sensational use of misdirection, ambiguity, and general distrust, the film stays incredibly taut, even without gore and violence. Every time Rosemary finds herself in a place of solace, or a comfort zone for the viewer, it’s brutally shattered by catastrophic events – as if to jolt audiences out of even the briefest relaxing of nerves.
While moments like the pivotal scene of impregnation and the climactic reveal of a shrouded bassinet offer occasional visceral shocks, the key triumph of “Rosemary’s Baby” is how pervasive and invasive its sense of silently looming evil really is.
Rosemary’s Baby combines just the right amount of Euro horror and contemporary Hollywood flair, resulting in a believable tale of the supernatural that could have easily been dismissed as silly.
