Critic Reviews:

It is hard to take pint-sized Claude Rains’ Phantom seriously, he seems more like an indignant fox terrier than the forbiddingly mad figure that Lon Chaney memorably incarnated.

Despite the lavish production values, there’s several problems with this particular version, not least being the inexplicable reason for giving the Phantom the surname of Claudin.

Phantom of the Opera should be commended for establishing the character of Erik/Erique as a deeply complex but hopelessly troubled human being.
