High Tension (2003)

High Tension is a movie unlike a thousand others, up to and including the twist near the end. The difference is that this movie doesn't assume you're interested in motives behind the killings or the reasons behind the insanity. What they do assume is that you're into awesome weapons and are cool with wild implausibility. For example, there's one scene where the antagonist finds a set of keys belonging to a high performance muscle car and is just automatically capable of driving it like a pro. In the beginning of the movie she's barely keeping up speed limit in a economy car, now she's blasting through gears and doing controlled burnouts? I mean, don't get me wrong it was a cool scene, it was just one that pulls you out of the movie due to its ridiculousness. But, for all the implausibility there's also a lot of smart details in the storyline that make it stand out among others in this genre. For example, the decisions the same antagonist makes while being stalked by the killer are refreshingly clever. Instead of just running and screaming she effectively outsmarts the killer for her own survival. Oh, and if you watch it on Shudder as I did, expect it to start out dubbed into English only to switch back to French, then back to English, then back to French, depending on whose talking and when. Oh, and there's gore. Lots and lots of gore.
