Critic Reviews:
Sadly, when all is said and done, Bram Stoker’s Van Helsing rather than being an interesting literary adaptation is another chapter in the transformation of Steve Lawson from the maker of cheerfully cheesy and/or sleazy films like Killersaurus and Hellriser to the new Andrew Jones.
The film is an okay effort, nothing earth shattering, nothing terrible either. Steve Lawson likes to shoot his films on low budgets. This is the case so much here that the entire film seems to take place inside a single big old house with one side trip to the local church where Lucy’s coffin lies.
...overall I thought the story was well constructed and the cast did well with what they had. If there is a complaint then it is in the lack of suitable atmosphere. This felt like a rather talky period piece more than the gothic melodrama/horror it should have been...
