Top 10 Female Villains in Modern Horror

What makes a good horror movie? Well, there are a couple of important things: the story, acting, visuals and of course we can’t forget the bad guys. Horror as a category is so wide that it would take us forever to cover every evil mind so we decided to focus on just one thing.

For this specific list let us address all the best horror films that have a great female villain. This sounds like it is going to be an easy task, correct? I mean, how many great female baddies are there? Probably won’t even manage to find 10 good ones, right? Wrong!

Before we go any further, let us honor the pioneers that paved the road for our modern era of female horror villains. Every fan of horror knows of Greta from Exorcist played by Linda Blair, Pamela from Friday the 13th played by Betsy Palmer, Annie from Misery played by Kathy Bates and we could also mention Angela/Peter from Sleepaway Camp played by Felissa Rose, but this one gets a bit tricky after the twist ending (Spoiler-alert) and especially after the sequel.

Because of all the things mentioned above we made things a bit easier and we’ll exclude horrors made prior to the year 2000. In addition to this, there won't be any ghost, zombies, mutants, vampires, werewolves, aliens, demons, dolls and especially no female zombie-mutant animals. Yes, the web is full of these lists where we have Xenomorph Queens and Sheep presented as best female villains and we even found an article explaining the importance of gender for the Great White from Jaws.

Alright, now that all of this is covered, let us start with our list for the Top 10 Best Female Villains:

10. May (2002)

Angela Bettis plays May, a weird girl searching for a perfect friend. As her social attempts continue to fail she grows increasingly frustrated and eventually suffers a mental break, which is when the horror part of the movie really kicks in. You know the old saying: “If you can’t find the perfect friend, you will have to make one!”. Me neither but May definitely follows through on this one and it leaves behind a bloody mess.

9. Ma (2019)

Sue Ann is a lonely middle aged woman played by Octavia Spencer. She befriends a group of teenagers after helping them get drinks from the store and later offers her home as a place for them to party, but there are certain rules. What began as a teenage dream quickly turns into a nightmare.

8. House of 1000 Corpses (2003)

Back in 2003 Rob Zombie gave us the iconic Firefly family. Baby Firefly was played by Sherri Moon Zombie. She used to hitchhike and lure unsuspecting teens to her home where the rest of the Firefly family waited. 7. Orphan (2009)

1. The Loved Ones (2009)

This one is really twisted. What Lola Stone wants, Lola Stone gets.  Actress Robin McLeavy did a fantastic job showing us what a truly demented, sadistic and evil person looks like.
