List by penguin_peteRising from the unbridled consumerist culture of the mid-20th century, shopping malls reached their peak in the 1980s. For many Americans in the late 20th century, the local mall was not only the prime place to shop, but was also the most viable option to watch a movie at the cineplex, play video games at the arcade, bowl at the bowling alley, or check up on the latest pop culture. For a whole generation of inner-city teens, it was literally the only place where they could go and hang out. Small wonder that malls became the setting for many a horror movie, especially if the creator wanted to take satirical potshots at capitalism. The decline and fall of the mall empire has become a subject of fascinating, morbid study in the 21st century, making horror movies set in malls all the more relevant.
