Cinemassacre, the movie-critic side of the Angry Video Game Nerd, lovingly reminisces about TNT’s MonsterVision. He captures eloquently the spirit of being a movie geek back in the ‘90s. Yes, kids, staying up late to feed videos into the VCR was often the only way to capture a movie marathon, in between feeding cassette tapes into the boom box to record a song off the radio. Good times. The original run of the show ran 1991-2000, straight through the cable-heyday ‘90s, with host Joe Bob Briggs entering the show in 1996.
Cinemassacre’s pessimistic conclusion (note this was done in 2010) as to whether the show would ever come back turned out to be premature, happily. MonsterVision surprised the cookies out of everyone by coming back for a revival on Shudder this summer. Sorry you missed it if you’re just hearing about it now, but the multi-movie marathon aired in mid-July is still available to Shudder stream now.
For a Bonus Buck, here’s an interview with the one and only Joe Bob Briggs. Four stars!
